There’s no doubt about it – being a leader can be stressful

When dealing with day-to-day mental demands, it often has an impact on our physical bodies. And if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer, neck pain can become a regular occurrence.

So when does it stop being annoying – and become a health concern that needs to be addressed?

Do anything of the following sound familiar?

  • You worry your neck is getting stiffer with each passing day
  • You have tried everything, but your neck pain keeps returning – but worse each time
  • You wake with a sore neck and a headache
  • You can’t turn your neck while driving to check for traffic
  • Your neck hurts with all the online meetings by the end of the day
  • You are worried about too much screen time

If yes, you might be stuck in what we call a pain spasm cycle.

What causes a pain spasm cycle?

Poor posture, decreased fitness or long hours at a poor desk setup are all possible causes. But after a period of time, there is a ‘breaking point’. That ‘breaking point’ looks like a poor night’s sleep on a bad (or old) pillow – causing you to be unable to turn your head in the morning. Or it could be a sudden “grab” when turning your head, a bad neck at the end of the day, or some other sharp pain.

Often it’s not a single incident that causes the problem. Over time, the muscles and the joints get overburdened, causing movements and positions they were not designed to do. This is especially true for excessive screen time with phones, tablets and laptops.

The spasm will often lead to further weakness in or limited movement, which alters further alters the way you move and results in further discomfort. This is what we call maladaption or bad adaptation. In other words, your body adapts to keep you functioning, but it’s not moving the way that is most efficient and/or painless.

So how can I fix it?

If you’re looking for a solution, Necks Backs Sports is here for you.

They can break the pain spasm cycle via:

• Massaging the muscles to try and ease the spasm.

• Mobilising, traction or manipulating (whichever is preferred, necessary and beneficial), the joints.

• Using dry needling (traditional acupuncture) or laser acupuncture – which is a very effective method of pain control and decreasing spasm.

• Discussing the necessary lifestyle changes (diet, stress levels, sleep to name but a few factors) that need to be made.
