Productivity - it's a habit!

Recently I wrote here about the challenge of exiting the email trap to get more work done. Numerous people have since said to me, words to the effect “that’s exactly how my day goes and I can’t get anything important done.”

So I thought I’d revisit the subject this week, ahead of our 26 October Business After Five where guest speaker Dermot Crowley will be speaking about personal productivity in the digital age.

What is the essence of the inbox problem and how can we achieve better personal productivity? Here’s what some local authors have to say on the topic.

In his book Smart Work, Dermot Crowley explains that we need to create habits around three core practices: processing, planning and prioritising. He says developing these habits will “allow you to be productive without even having to think about it.”

John Drury, in his recently published book Integrate says we need to establish effective self-management, and learn to organise what’s important, set realistic goals, create plans that work, and commit to daily habits.

In Remarkability, writer and blogger talent agency founder Lorraine Murphy describes her journey as a business owner. Much of the advice she offers centres around developing the habits that will lead to success. A simple statement on the back cover sums up the situation very nicely: “Success isn’t made up of huge leaps forward, but instead small repetitive actions completed each day.”

The three authors come at this topic from very different angles, but there’s a very clear recurring theme – success is just a few new habits away!

If you need to adapt your habits for success, coming along to our Business After Five to hear what Dermot Crowley of Adapt Productivity has to say, might be just the inspiration you need. To book visit the Chamber website at www.sydneyhillsbusiness.com.au and head to the events page.
