Learn what it takes to be first past the post at February’s Business After Five event. Hosted by Mercedes-Benz Castle Hill, our guest speaker is multiple Premiership-winning Sydney horse trainer Chris Waller, the man behind the incomparable mare Winx.
Now retired, Winx won a record 33 consecutive races, earning her owners $26,451,175 in prize money and winning 37 of her 43 starts. She won four consecutive Cox Plates and was named Australian Horse of the Year four times.
From humble beginnings to racing success
Chris Waller grew up in New Zealand’s North Island in Foxton, north of Wellington. In his twenties he took over the stables of trainer Paddy Busuttin and in 2000 took a team of four horses to race in Sydney. He came to Australia with two maxed-out credit cards, no cash, his childhood sweetheart and a few empty horse boxes at Rosehill.
He brought NZ thoroughbred Party Belle to Sydney that same year and won a maiden at Wyong. He returned with her a year later to win three in town.
Rosehill is still head quarters for Chris, although he now has bases in Flemington, Warwick Farm and the Gold Coast. His success not only with Winx but with many other horses has earned him the respect of his profession.
Winning team key to success
The support of major thoroughbred owner Bob Ingham was a key driver for Chris’s success, he says, and helped build the foundations of the Chris Waller Racing stable.
“It is a privilege to train for Mr Ingham,” he told Thoroughbred Racing in 2017. “I am also extremely thankful to all my other owners in the stable who have helped us to become what we are today.”
Australia’s leading Group 1 horse trainer, Chris credits his success to the people and infrastructure that he has built up around him. He’s won nine Metropolitan Premierships in NSW and trained 172 Metropolitan Winners in the 2018/19 season, with 108 Group 1 winners.
Chris’s story of perseverance and hard work with the support of a great team and backers holds important lessons for anyone looking to succeed in business. “When you come from nothing, and never had nothing, the only thing that digs you out of the hole is hard work,” he says.
